Festivals are events that celebrate various forms of art and culture, including music, film, food and traditions. They are a dynamic part of the global culture and can provide a sense of community, belonging and cultural identity for participants. Many of these festivals also promote tourism and support economic development for local communities.
The word festival comes from the Latin word festivus, meaning “feast”. Originally the term meant simply a day or time of religious or other celebration, marked by feasting and ceremonies: a Christmas festival; a Roman festival. Later it came to mean an often regularly recurring program of cultural performances, exhibitions or competitions: a theatre festival; a film festival; a book festival. In other words, a festival is any kind of large or elaborate celebration.
Today, festival is most widely used to refer to any kind of event or series of special events centered on a particular theme or aspect of the community. For example, a town may hold an annual festival to mark the coming of spring or a city may hold a literary festival every year to celebrate its literature and authors.
People from all walks of life attend festivals to enjoy the entertainment, atmosphere and activities. These events can be educational and even transformative, fostering creativity and personal growth. In addition, they can be a powerful tool for promoting social change and celebrating diversity.
Whether it is an outdoor music festival or a winter carnival, each type of festival offers an unique experience and is an opportunity for participants to immerse themselves in the culture of their choice. These events provide a platform to explore different artistic expressions and cultural identity while promoting social inclusion, tourism, economic development and cultural heritage.

From the AP Stylebook, 2018. A festival is an occasion for feasting and celebration, especially one that occurs at regular intervals. It may be associated with religious observances, as in the case of Diwali, which marks the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and order over chaos.
